Letting
go of the old and inviting the new...
Well,
spring has finally sprung and as the weather starts to warm up
and we all begin to come out of our winter ‘hibernation mode’,
many of us are starting to think about spring cleaning. The winter
clothes start to get packed away, the summer ones start to emerge
as we see what suites, what fits and what will be ‘in’ for the
season.
With this emergence may be an excellent time for a ‘spring cleaning
of the soul’. It is a great time to ask yourself things like -
where am I going? Where have I been? What lessons have I been
learning along the way?
Just like the swapping over and ‘chucking out’ of clothing, they
may no longer fit, nor suit the person that you are now, as opposed
to even the person that you were ‘last season’.
Once you have established what you would like to rid yourself
of, it is up to you how you express letting go of the old and
inviting the new. It may be as simple as acknowledging it, and
moving on. However, you may want to cement your resolve through
some sort of contract with yourself, or imagining that you place
all of your old ways in a large bag that you see yourself leaving
somewhere or throwing off an imaginary cliff or bridge. You may
feel foolish but it will help to ‘seal the deal’ of the new you.
This is also an opportune time to have a chakra clearing or balancing
to help bring you back into alignment on all levels. Chakras are
energetic wheels occurring throughout the body that can affect
the physical as well as the energetic self.
Most importantly in this process it is to HAVE FUN!!! This is
not an exercise in self punishment or judgment; it is simply a
spring clean. Have a go, you never know what you may find!

What
do psychology, business management, nursing and herbs have in
common?
Maria draws on her diverse background to make sure she understands
what is going on for you and to shape her recommendations to help
you move towards great energy and wellbeing.
The
body is amazing! It has all the knowledge and skills to heal –
it mends broken bones, heals cuts and grazes, and repairs and
renews itself continually, provided it has the right
conditions and the right raw materials. As a naturopath, Maria
works to allow the body to heal itself and to encourage that healing
by gently removing obstacles to good health. These obstacles include
poor nutrition from junk food, toxins such as nicotine, poor stress
management, lack of fitness, fun and fresh air.
It's
Spring Clean Time!
Years
ago –before supermarkets – springtime meant light eating, as there
was not much produce around after winter. As well, we have tended
to move away from traditional and religious fasting periods –
for example, Lent, which occurs in spring in the northern hemisphere.
Nowadays we feel the effects of eating all that stodgy winter
food – sluggishness, slightly overweight and lowish energy. It’s
time to detox.
Detox
is not good for everyone. It depends on your health and your symptoms.
If detox is a suitable therapy for you, Maria will suggest a detox
program of 3 sessions over 6 weeks. She will check your medical
history and all your body systems, test your nutritional status,
iridology then nail and tongue analysis to find out what’s going
on for you. Based on that information, she will recommend an eating
program to rest and restore your digestive system, herbal medicine
to support organs such as the liver, advice on fitness and exercise,
and flower essences for mental and emotional support during this
period of change and renewal.
Just
six weeks to great energy and better health. So come on, after
our Canberra winter it’s time to get out there and smell the tulips!

Flaxseed,
ginseng hold up in cancer trials
US
research into alternative medicines suggests flaxseed slows the
growth of prostate tumours and ginseng helps relieve the fatigue
of cancer patients. The studies reflect doctors' efforts to explore
the risks and benefits of foods and supplements that are routinely
taken by their patients with little scientific proof they help.
In the flaxseed study, researchers at Duke University Medical
Center in North Carolina and colleagues evaluated the seed's role
as a food supplement in 161 men who were scheduled to undergo
surgery for prostate cancer. "The growth rate was decreased
in the men who got flaxseed," said Dr Nancy Davidson, an
oncologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who is president-elect
of ASCO. "I think this is fascinating."
Flaxseed
is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, a fibre found on the
seed coat. "We
were looking at flaxseed because of its unique nutrient profile,"
said Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, a researcher in Duke's School of
Nursing, who led the study.
Half
of the men in the study added 30 grams of flaxseed daily to their
diets for about 30 days. Half of the flaxseed group also went
on a low-fat diet. After
the surgery, the researchers looked at the men's tumour cells
to see how quickly the cancer had multiplied. The
cancer cells in both the flaxseed groups grew about 30 to 40 per
cent slower than the control group.
Ginseng
In
the ginseng trial, Debra Barton of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota, and colleagues tested three different doses of the
herb on patients with a variety of cancers who were expected to
live at least six months.
Twenty-five
percent of patients taking a 1,000mg dose and 27 per cent of patients
taking a 2,000mg dose said their fatigue symptoms were "moderately
better" or "much better." Only
10 per cent of those taking a 750mg dose reported an improvement,
which was about the same as the placebo group. Patients
in the trial took Wisconsin ginseng from a single crop that was
tested for uniform potency. It was powdered and given in a capsule
form.
"I
wouldn't have predicted this, I have to admit," Dr Davidson
said in an interview. "We might want to test this on a large
scale." The flaxseed study was funded by the National Institutes
of Health and the ginseng study was supported by US Public Health
Service grants.

Acupuncture,
massage helpful after cancer surgery
A
combination of acupuncture and massage may help ease pain and
depression symptoms after cancer surgery, a new study suggests.
Acupuncture
has been shown in many studies to ease pain, and there's growing
evidence that it helps quell post-surgery nausea. Massage, meanwhile,
has been shown in certain studies to aid cancer patients' anxiety.
Until
now, however, no studies have tried combining the two therapies
for people undergoing cancer surgery -- a physically and emotionally
difficult process.
The
new study included 138 patients who were randomly assigned to
have either standard post-operative care or standard care plus
acupuncture and massage for 2 days following their cancer surgery.
Overall,
the study found, patients who received the therapies had a steeper
decline in pain over 3 days, as well as fewer symptoms of depression.
The findings are published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom
Management.
"We
can say that adding acupuncture and massage definitely helped,"
said lead study author Dr. Wolf E. Mehling, an assistant professor
of family and community medicine at the University of California
San Francisco.
There's
evidence from other research that acupuncture and massage have
relevant physiological effects. For example, Mehling noted, animal
research has found that massage can increase blood levels of oxytocin,
a hormone with pain- and anxiety-relieving actions; increased
oxytocin levels might counter stress-hormone elevations around
the time surgery, Mehling explained.
Similarly,
there's evidence that acupuncture triggers the release of nervous
system chemicals that help dull pain.
Whether
the therapies will become a widely used part of cancer treatment,
following surgery or in other contexts, remains to be seen. A
few major cancer centers in the U.S. currently offer acupuncture
and massage to inpatients and outpatients, Mehling said.

Introducing
Tina Koch Natural Beauty Therapist, Aromatherapist
and Massage Therapist
It’s Spring at last, and the change of the seasons is a perfect
time for a luxurious facial treatment. A facial will help your
skin to recover from winter’s harsh effects, and get you on the
path to radiant and healthy skin for the hotter months. You will
often find that a change in weather requires a change in skincare
routine or products.
Products
used during the facial are a mixture of Perfect Potion, a chemical-free,
plant-based Australian brand formulated by an expert aromatherapist,
and masks and massage oils made up by myself.
The
first treatment includes a detailed skin analysis, and I will
talk you through any issues that you are having. The facial will
then be tailored to your needs – whether you have great skin that
would benefit from maintenance, or problem skin that requires
specific solutions. Any future treatments would include personalised
masks and oils, using ingredients such as essential oils that
I will choose to achieve your goals.
For
some, a facial is purely a pampering experience, the facial massage
being one of the highlights. For this reason, a gift voucher is
always a great idea for someone special. And I find that men really
enjoy the treatment as much as women!
Perfect
Potion products can be ordered through me as required, and I will
always end a treatment with homecare advice, including skincare
products, routines, and lifestyle suggestions to support your
skincare goals.
A
natural-beauty facial is the perfect experience for people who
have sensitive skin, allergies, or had problems with products
in the past, as the treatment can be tailored to avoid problem
ingredients. All products are chemical-free and plant-based, with
no synthetic preservatives. There is an emphasis on the therapeutic
qualities of essential oils, but these can be avoided if necessary
due to sensitivities. Please feel free to call if you have any
questions or enquiries.

Herbal
extract effective remedy for depression: study
An
extract of the herbal remedy St John's wort is as effective as
a commonly prescribed drug for people suffering from moderate
to severe depression, researchers say.
They
compared the extract called WS 5570, which is made by the German
company Dr Willmar Schwabe Pharmaceuticals, and the antidepressant
paroxetine sold by GlaxoSmithKline under the brand name Paxil
or Seroxat.
St
John's wort is also known as hypericum perforatum.
"In
the treatment of moderate to severe major depression, hypericum
extract WS 5570 is at least as effective as paroxetine and is
better tolerated," University of Berlin Professor Armin Szegedi
said in a report published online by the British Medical Journal.
In
a study funded by the German company, the researchers compared
the treatments on 251 patients, aged 18-70, for six weeks.
Half
of the patients taking the extract reported an improvement, compared
to a third taking paroxetine.
Patients
taking the extract also reported fewer side effects such as stomach
disorders, according to the researchers.
Paroxetine
belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin re-uptake
inhibitors (SSRIs).
British
and European health authorities have voiced concern that the antidepressants
may increase the risk of suicide in young people.
"Our
results support the use of hypericum extract WS 5570 as an alternative
to standard antidepressants in moderate to severe depression,
especially as it is well tolerated," Professor Szegedi said.
