How do you lead yourself?
• Where
are you leading yourself?
• Are
you happy with where you have led yourself in this life so far?
• Have
you missed out on opportunities that other people don’t seem
to miss?
If you feel
as though you’re not 100% happy with where you are in life
right now, there is good news because leadership skills are skills
you can learn and it can be taught to you. Just like driving a car.
Much of where
we are in life is based on how we steer our behaviours and choices,
just like a driver behind the wheel of a car.
Some people
are fantastic drivers who had great parents or teachers who had
the time and patients to teach them the finer details of driving.
These people have great control over the clutch, knew how to inflate
their own tyres put oil into the engine and maintain the coolant
levels. On long road trips, they follow the map, stop for breaks,
sing songs and drink coffee while enjoying the journey.
Other people
are nervous; they never really feel as though they had the opportunity
to be comfortable behind the wheel of a car. The car always seems
to stall for them. They take constant wrong turns and the traffic
can sometimes make them angry. The journey never seems as smooth
for them as it does for other people.
Why is that?
It’s because
learning takes time and attention. Skills such as driving need to
be taught by a teacher who really cares about the student and is
an expert in their field. An expert can see your strengths and weaknesses,
which allows them to develop your skills and talents quickly.
Coaching is
a way of quickly developing your self-leadership skills, just like
taking driving lessons. A patient driving instructor is similar
to a coach who teaches you to develop and understand what will make
you happy and help you plan your way to success. A coach provides
you with a road map, entertaining music and good company to help
develop leadership skills to reach your favourite destination –
your happiness and goals.
